Launched in the Downtown Arts District of Los Angeles in 2011, The Pie Hole was born from a mother and son's belief that "pie is love." Becky Grasley and her son, Matthew Heffner, recruited the help of family and friends to get their pie shop up and running - and brought their friend Sean Brennan in as a business partner. Now with a second location in the Indiana Colony of Pasadena, The Pie Hole is serving up more pie and fresh coffee than ever.
"It's very gratifying to create a brand that is not just a marketing slogan, that is actually authentic and is based on a family dream of sharing happiness with as many people as possible," Brennan says.
When it came to opening up shop in a second location, deciding on the Pasadena artisan food and retail area was a no-brainer. "Our first location in the Downtown LA Arts District has such an amazing sense of history and community," Brennan says. "We wanted to find another similar area that would respond the same way to our concept. Pasadena was a natural fit."
The founding team at The Pie Hole views their pie and coffee house as more than a business. Pasadena's Indiana Colony is a new marketplace, and Brennan, Grasley, and Heffner see their storefront as a way of bringing the new members of this community together.
"We are not only contributing great sweet and savory pies and amazing coffee," Brennan says. "We are also providing a community gathering spot for everyone. Pasadena is a sophisticated community and they have responded to what we believe is the 'American Pie Shop' experience exceedingly well."
And why shouldn't they? With everything from traditional pies like Mom's Apple Crumble to more unusual varies, like Earl Grey and Mexican Chocolate, the Pie Hole bakes a pie for every taste. The shop even sells a wide variety of savory pies, including veggie, chorizo, and breakfast "hand pies" that are easy to take to go. You can compliment your pie with a salad or a fresh coffee or specialty latte.
The Pie Hole takes pride in actively engaging their customers with great food and great conversation. Brennan says he can feel the appreciation from their customers who come in with high "pie expectations" and don't leave disappointed. "Pie and coffee are personal and we know this," says Brennan.
"I love waking up every day excited to make a difference in people's lives," Brennan continues. "Our pie and coffee instantly make your day better-this is a special transformational product that most companies don't have. Most people can't imagine we would actually be as good as their family recipes...or even better. It really is fun."
