5 Tips for a Stress-Free Move: An Interview with Ralph Eaton of Walsh Moving & Storage

By Ralph Eaton

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Walsh Moving & Storage is a full-service moving company that has been family owned and operated out of the same building in Torrance since 1964. We perform local and long distance moves and offer packing services, self storage and temporary storage. Since our inception, we have ensured quality and excellence is the foundation of our company. We are an independent local and long-distance van line; we do not subcontract, broker or pass on your move to other companies. When you start with us, you end with us. We realize moving can be a stressful time and with our professional movers we deliver what others only promise.

What are some of the biggest challenges people in Southern California face when they're moving to another home?

Moving can be a large undertaking, and many customers are not prepared for the stresses that accompany moving. Besides finding the right home, finding the right movers is also important. Each company charges a little differently, and no two moves are identical, likewise the estimates that customers receive can vary between movers. While some movers ask for minimal details (e.g., the number of rooms to be moved, the square footage of your home), a more detailed survey is necessary for a more accurate estimate of cost and to ensure that everything is moved properly and within your time frame. At Walsh, we try to catch all of the ways a move can add time or require special handling. Our motto is, "We would rather tell you now, than surprise you on the day of the move." Some companies take advantage of hasty consumers by low balling estimates or adding hidden expenses/services later on.

What can they do to help prevent or solve those challenges?

The best way is to have a moving company come out and give a visual estimate or provide the moving company a thorough estimate over the phone. Phone estimates often are under actual cost because customers forget/neglect smaller items, storage areas, or boxes to be packed. When a customer calls us, we try to get as much information as possible to give a reliable quote. Our goal is to obtain a detailed list of items being moved, access of where our truck can park at origin and destination (i.e., long carry, any flights of stairs or elevator), and drive time. If special equipment is required for your move, we want to ensure you have it when you need it. Beware of companies that want to quickly book your move or take a deposit without thoroughly accessing all the details of your move. When customers are honest with us and themselves, quotes in person or over the phone can be reliable.

If you needed to move, what steps would you take to make the process stress-free?

Plan ahead! Most customers plan the actual move last. It should be one of the first things done when thinking about moving. Research your moving company. Find an established moving company with a good history of satisfied customers. For example, Walsh has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, over 200+ positive online reviews (encompassing Angie's List, Yelp and other service review sites) and has been in business for over 50 years.

Can you share one of the regrets you've seen people have about their move?

Besides late planning, customers have regrets about their packing strategies. Some customers do not even realize that their smaller items must be packed into boxes in order for all their goods to be efficiently loaded onto a moving truck. Other customers are ill prepared for the time involved with packing which can amount to dozens of hours. It is best to spend a couple weekends, before the move, to pack the unnecessary items. Packing is an important part of moving which requires expertise to ensure that your goods are transported safely to your new home. Though packing can increase the cost of the move considerably, hiring an experienced mover to do your packing can greatly reduce the time and stress of moving.

What are some things homeowners should look for in a moving company to ensure that their move will be as easy and stress-free as possible?

When a moving company gives a quote based on the number of rooms in the house, that doesn't necessarily mean they are gathering all the details necessary to ensure that your move goes smoothly and falls within your budget. Consider getting a visual estimate for more complex moves and a written proposal to protect against surprise costs. Find out if there are any hidden fees like fuel surcharges or PUC taxes. For local moves, Walsh has no additional fees or surcharges, only an hourly rate that is guaranteed not to change on the day of your move. For long-distance moves, Walsh will give guaranteed quotes based on a list of items and detailed truck access. Customers can provide their information either by visual or over the phone estimates.
