Choosing the Right Electrician for You: An Interview with Jack Swinson of Swinson Electric

By Jack Swinson

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Swinson Electric has been a family run business. The husband-wife team of Jack and Kathy Swinson have been at the helm since 1985. We incorporated in 1998.

What are some of the services your company provides?

Swinson Electric's Construction Dept handles commercial electrical installations for ground up and tenant improvement projects such as office buildings, restaurants, retail stores, churches, hospitals, airport projects, assisted living housing projects, community centers, schools and ground-up custom residential homes.

Swinson Electric's Service Dept handles electrical installation, repair and maintenance for homeowners, commercial retail shops, schools and property management companies among others.

3 important qualities an electrician must possess:

  • Integrity
  • Knowledge
  • State Certifications

What business practices does your company implement and believe are necessary for a quality electrician to possess?

We have an efficient hiring process that includes administering our own electrician's exam so we are aware of their skill level. We perform drug testing and background checks on all new employee's. We hire state certified electricians or electrical trainees.

In your opinion, is it better to have an electrician who is a specialist or generalist?

Both actually. A generalist can wear more electrical hats and can be better utilized in a small company such as ours. However a Specialist is important as well in areas such as Title 24 compliance, or more complex installations.

What advice do you have for someone who found an electrician they can afford, however perhaps he/she doesn't have the experience they want?

I would suggest they ask for references. Check to see if they are members of the local better business bureau. They should always be sure the electrician is licensed, bonded and insured. The customer can check their license with the CA State Lic Board's website. What the electrician lacks in experience may end up costing the customer more than they bargained for.

What's the best way for people to get in contact with you and your company?

We have a direct link on our website ( to our email system on our Contacts page. They can also call us at 858-874-2506. We are available from 7:00am-4:30 pm. If they call after hours they can leave a message and we will get back to them the next business day.
