Enhancing Your Yard with Water Features: An Interview with Jack Sellinger of GFG Landscaping, Inc.

By Jack Sellinger

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

GFG Landscaping, Inc. is a full-service landscape design and installation company with an emphasis on pride of workmanship, professionalism and great communication.

Can you briefly describe what some of the most popular water features are for homeowners in Southern California and the San Diego area?

We have designed and installed many water features in the past, but in recent years the most popular have been the pondless water features. This is mostly due to the fact that there is much less of a commitment to maintaining these types of landscape components.

What are some of the basic choices a homeowner will need to make during the design process?

The first considerations when in the design process is the visual and audible effect our clients are looking for. There are different techniques to creating the right experience for the particular environment, such as using cobble instead of water in the basin where the water hits to create a more natural river-like sound. Using different textures on a water feature can create varying sounds and a creative visual effect, especially when lit up at night. A practical consideration may also be to find the right location, one that allows enjoyment throughout the yard as well as from inside the house.

How long does it typically take from start to finish to design and install a new pond?

Water feature installation time can vary with size and complexity. Typically, a small front entry feature will take one day and a large waterfall with a pond may take a week.

What are some of the biggest challenges when it comes to installing a fountain?

The biggest challenge to the installation process may be to find the right contractor who has an eye for a more natural feature or who can complete the work in a timely manner.

What advice can you give to people about proper maintenance for their new water feature?

The maintenance to a pond is quite different for a pondless water feature. In a pond and falls you have the ability to create the "natural cycle" with fish, plants and bacteria. Mother nature becomes the custodian, creating a balance of the components needed to create a healthy ecosystem. In other less natural environments, there is a need for a more manual approach, adding beneficial bacteria or algae clearing solutions periodically. The best method for a successful water feature in any case is to hire a professional for long-term maintenance.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?

Our offices are located in Pacific Beach and La Mesa, but we provide landscape design and construction services throughout most of San Diego County. We can be reached by calling 619-681-8738.
