Everything You Need to Know About Doors: An Interview with Mike Boroff of Milano Doors

By Mike Boroff

Tell us a little bit about your experience, company history and the services you offer.

We started our business over 10 years ago. I was building my own house in California and could not get any modern doors from Home Depot. While I was visiting Italy I noticed all the doors in the hotels were really nice and I found a factory near Milan, Italy, where I bought my doors. After I finished my house, anybody who visited me ordered doors from me, so I start business. Now we have four locations.

What are the main differences between an exterior and interior door?

An exterior door has to be built stronger with different finish to be in rain, snow and any harsh weather condition. We sell our exterior doors from Arizona to Alaska and Canada.

Can you explain some of the design choices people have when it comes to doors?

Often I see a husband and wife who visit our showroom and live together for 30 years cannot agree on what door model they like. We have over 100 different design and colors, so there is a lot to choose from.

How does a door relate to the sound and temperature inside a home or room?

Exterior doors must protect a house in any weather.

Is there a mistake that people make a lot when they're installing a new door? Can you give us a tip on how to avoid this?

I understand that doors usually come last when you build a house and usually the budget money is gone, so people try to get cheapest doors possible. Even if you get doors for free, it will cost a lot of money to put 3 to 4 coats of paint then sand it and put another coat and at the end you will get cheap hollow-core apartment doors. I have one customer who told me after they installed Milano doors, "We spend $30,000 for a new roof, $20,000 for new plumbing, $25,000 on new air conditioning and electrical systems, new drywall etc. Over $100,000 spent and we cannot see it, but our doors we can see and enjoy every day and bring modern decor to out house. "
