Can you briefly explain what artisan furnishings are?

Artisans are tradesmen who are specialists in cabinet and/or furniture making, design/build and finish. Able to duplicate from historical items, create new or build as submitted drawings require. The craftsmanship is superior to machine- or mass-produced items, providing designers, builders and clients exquisite hand-crafted and personalized options.

When you're working on interior design for a home, how do you decide if an artisan piece is right for a particular room or space?

I have selected to work with local artisans in order to accomplish the specifics of what the project demands. Whereas mass-produced pieces are available in just one or two sizes with limited details or finishes, artisans can personalize each design size as needed, and produce unique and specific items. This eliminates freight and shipping charges, often producing in a shorter lead time. The end result is efficient and beautiful furnishings.

What are some common design styles that artisan materials would work well with?

Depending on the project, artisans can select and implement traditional, modern and all styles in between. In a craftsman bungalow it would be important to use details of that period. For someone wanting a French country kitchen, details such as cabriole leg and carvings would be popular choices. The history of furniture is rich with beautiful designs that are characteristic of each period. Artisans can draw inspiration from all.

How do professional interior designers find artisan pieces? How can nonprofessionals find them?

Most designers keep a very special and private list of go-to artisans. We know that our relationship and communication enhances the process. We need to ensure that each and every order is produced with great care and attention to detail. We represent many clients, and consistent results are a requirement. I have found artisans by word of mouth, shop visits, design showcase homes, and by visiting model homes. In each case I have interviewed the owners and looked at actual samples of their work.

What advice would you give to homeowners are redecorating their house and want their designer to include some artisan furnishings?

I would advise homeowners to hire a professional interior designer to work with them on their project. The years of experience and contacts interior designers have will allow them to achieve the best results. In preparation, homeowners may want to visit new homes on the market, remodeled homes or showcase design homes in their area. These visits, plus home magazines can provide inspiration and ideas critical when planning for their home.
