Expert Tips on Decorative Paint Finishes: An Interview with Jorge Jimenez of Jimenez Custom Painting Inc.

By Jorge Jimenez

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Jimenez Custom Painting Inc. is a Southern California, family owned and operated painting and wood finishing contractor, providing interior and exterior residential straight painting, decorative painting, Venetian plaster, lime wash wall treatments, gilding, cabinet finishing, high gloss lacquer and furniture finishing for the most amazing, discerning and generous homeowners, custom home builders, renowned interior designers and architects since 1996.

Can you briefly talk about what decorative paint finishes are and where they can be used?

Decorative finishes can include lime washes, wall glazing, color washing, stenciling, striping, faux finishing and strie. Of course there are many more variations of these and they can be used on walls, ceilings, cabinetry and woodwork. Some can only be used on walls and ceilings, others can only be used on millwork and cabinetry, and some, such as stenciling, lacquer, striping and strie, can be used on walls, ceilings, cabinetry and millwork.

Although most homeowners have decorative finishes installed in the main, most-used areas of their homes, such as family rooms, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, entries, stairways and master suites, they can also be used in children's bedrooms and guest suites, as well to give each their own character and vibe. Decorative finishes can be applied with different sized brushes, rollers, spray, rags, plastic, sponges, rubber combs and a variety of tools specifically designed to create the desired pattern or texture. The experienced craftsman will use one to several tools, techniques and materials to achieve the desired result.

What are some of the most popular decorative faux finishes and/or designer treatments for homes in Southern California?

It seems there are trends that interior designers follow, but in the last few years we have been installing a lot of lime washes, Venetian plasters, gloss and satin lacquer on walls, cabinets and millwork, and antiquing of cabinetry and millwork with gilded details.

How is the price/cost usually determined for different painting projects?

Cost depends on the size and scope of the project, type of decorative finish being applied, application technique, cost of the materials being used, cost of supplies needed, the number of coats needed to achieve the desired results, the number of craftsmen and the time required to complete the project.

What are some of the benefits of having custom painting in your home?

The benefits of having custom painting and finishes installed are that these types of finishes are unique, beautiful and durable, and they make you feel relaxed and special. We have collected hundreds of finish samples throughout the years and we have yet to apply the same finish twice. It is always a variation of something we have done before or something completely new and different. This, of course, is why we love what we do, bringing homeowners and interior designer's idea of a finish, color, texture and technique into reality, for them to see, feel and experience everyday!

What advice do you have for a homeowner who is thinking of going with a "regular" painter or DIY for decorative finishes?

Make sure the painting contractor has previous experience in decorative painting, lots of references and can show you actual samples of the work done in the past. Of course you must make sure he or she has a painting contractor's license, worker's comp, general liability and commercial auto insurance. He should also have an in-house staff and will not be using a subcontractor to do the work for him.

For the DIY, there are several companies that market DIY finishing materials along with kits and instructions on how to apply their products. Some of these are Ralph Lauren Paint and Modern Masters who supply how to guides and how to videos. Some such as Faux Effects offer workshops on how to use their materials for the best effect possible. If you will be finishing your own space, make sure you familiarize yourself with the products and follow the instructional guide or video closely to avoid costly mistakes and mishaps. The best way to achieve this would be to first work on 2' X 2' heavy cardboard or 1/4" masonite sample boards. You might go through the process several times before you feel that you can easily replicate the look and technique you desire on your actual walls or millwork surfaces.
