Famoso Mexican Street Food Brings Authentic South Of the Border Tacos to San Diego

By Pamela Sosnowski

The first thing you need to know about Famoso Mexican Street Food is that the menu is somewhat limited. The second thing you need to know about the San Diego restaurant is that what it does make, it makes extremely well.

Famoso's focus is on street tacos, not unlike those that you'd find on a trip to Mexico, made with the freshest ingredients by following traditional recipes. Each flavor of the gourmet street tacos comes topped with cilantro, finely chopped onions, and fresh made guacamole. Customers can choose their preference of meat, or opt for a specialty taco such as the fish or shrimp taco.

For owner Angel Hernandez, his restaurant was inspired by both his love of the Baja area and the nation south of the border.

"We have been in business for four years and I have always had a love for food, especially Mexican," he said. "(I) felt that we needed a different approach to Mexican food in San Diego. Our food is based on my travels throughout Baja growing up."

Other delicacies on the menu include a hotdog wrapped in bacon accompanied by avocado, mayonnaise, and tomatoes, and Bavarian cream-filled churros, perfect for finishing a meal with something sweet. Famoso's street fries are a customer favorite for a good reason: they come topped with chorizo, cheese, guacamole, pico de gallo, and a chipotle and cilantro sauce.

True to its name, Famoso also takes its menu to the streets, literally, via a fully equipped food truck that clients can rent for parties, weddings, fundraisers, and other special events. Other catering options include a dropped off build-it-yourself taco bar with all of the trimmings including rice, beans, nacho chips, guacamole, and salsa.

Famoso also specializes in taco cart catering, which is like their food truck but on a smaller scale. The taco cart more easily fits into limited spaces such as driveways, backyards, and street corners. Employees prepare, cook, and serve tacos, sides, and condiments from the taco carts which are not unlike the ones used by Mexican street vendors. The company typically rents its taco carts for three and a half hours, and two and a half hours for its food truck service. Enough food to serve three to five tacos per person is prepared.

Additionally, the restaurant offers an online "to go" menu for convenient ordering and pick-up which includes some breakfast items and a taco pizza. Famoso Mexican Street Tacos is open Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 9 PM. To view the menu or learn more about catering options, visit eatfamoso.com.
