Get the Party Started with Urban Shindigs' Full Wedding Service

By Marina I. Jokic

For those wanting to throw an unconventional wedding, Urban Shindigs in San Diego is the go-to destination. Co-owner Tawnee Gomez graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in 2009, which shaped her professional path in a big way. Her background in marketing and creative design helped her craft a savvy business plan, and differentiate her business by specializing in non-traditional weddings.

"After graduating FIDM in 2009, I found myself working in a very corporate world; I was craving creative work," she said. "That's when weddings found me." "After helping a few friends design and plan their beautiful day, I quickly realized that this was my passion."

Being a successful wedding planner calls for sensitivity to clients' needs, impeccable organization and attention to detail, and of course, creativity.

"We like to stray away from tradition, and create an event that really captures the person," Gomez said.

Understanding and actualizing a couple's vision for their wedding is anything by simple. In fact, it takes a keen sense and astuteness to really get what a couple wants on their wedding day to the last detail. At times, people are uncertain as to what they actually want. Gomez is there to help and guide them. She is talented at her job, so much so that she can even help people figure out their unique style.

You wouldn't naturally associate the color black with a wedding, but it is Gomez's favorite palette to work with. She was a tattooed bride herself, and is especially skilled at throwing a wedding that emphasizes such artistic elements.

Obsessed with craft beer, madly in love with her husband Luis, and doting on her dog, Johnny Cash, Gomez is not a typical wedding planner. Luis is a professional musician and also provides the DJ service at the weddings. With two other coordinators on their team, Luis and Tawnee are ready to handle even the most elaborate of weddings.

"We are a team. There is something about working with your partner that is hard, yet the most rewarding ever," Gomez said. "We just get each other; we don't even have to talk to know what [the other one] is [thinking]."

Reminiscing about her own wedding day, Gomez recalls the flood of emotions and tears.

"Sending a bride down the aisle or watching a couple do the first dance always brings us back," she said. In love with each other and loving what they do makes the Gomezes a team to be reckoned with.

Gomez's favorite aspect of a wedding is the unspoken appreciation of their clients. When the lights turn on and the music ends, the expression on the couple's faces is worth a thousand words.
