Gutter Installation and Repair 101: An Interview with Randall Blackwell of Century Raingutters

By Randall Blackwell

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Century Raingutters was established in 2011 and is the leader in quality gutter service in San Diego. We specialize in rain gutter repair and the on-site manufacturing and installation of affordable seamless gutters. We have over 23 years experience in gutter installation, most of which was in southern Oregon where it rains a lot. This makes us the most experienced gutter contractor in San Diego and the leader in quality craftsmanship. No box miters, all corners custom-cut by hand.

Is there something that most people don't know about gutter installation that they should know?

The proper slope is very important to function. Not enough slope and the gutters can fill faster than they can drain, and too much slope and water could run past the downspout and splash over the end cap. We use water to slope our gutters and use the bare minimum to insure proper drainage.

What are the main types of gutters to choose from, and do you have any recommendations specifically for houses in Southern California?

There are plastic, commercial aluminum, commercial steel, seamless aluminum and seamless copper. For most homeowners in San Diego, seamless aluminum is the most affordable long-term gutter system they can buy. Because of the seamless design, we make them on site. There are no seams to leak and the material under most conditions is warrantied for 100 years.

If you happen to be right on the ocean, then copper is the only way to go. Although there initial cost is somewhat higher they will last forever under any conditions.

Should homeowners be doing anything to help maintain their gutters?

A annual inspection, cleaning and rinse is really all that needs to be done for most systems.

What are some of the most common signs that gutter repairs are needed for Southern California homes?

Loose gutter falling off the structure, leaks at corners or the downspouts, evidence of vegetation growing out of the gutters, and overflowing gutters.

How can people tell that they need to have their gutters repaired or replaced?

Not functioning properly or leaking. Visual evidence of the gutter coming loose or spikes backing out.

Do you have any tips for homeowners who think their gutters need to be cleaned?

This can be dangerous. When it comes to cleaning off the roof or gutters it is always best to hire a professional.
