What are some facts about fire sprinklers that homeowners should know?

Fires kill more people in the United States every year than all natural disasters combined. If you have a reported fire in your home, the risk of dying decreases by about 80 percent when sprinklers are present. People in homes with sprinklers are protected against significant property loss sprinklers reduce the average property loss by about 70 percent per fire. Home sprinkler systems respond quickly to reduce the heat, flames, and smoke from a fire, giving families valuable time to get to safety. Roughly 85 percent of the time, just one sprinkler operates.

Can you explain the top benefits of installing a sprinkler system in your house?

Properly installed and maintained automatic fire sprinkler systems help save lives. What many people don't realize is that the same life-saving technology is also available for homes, where roughly 85 percent of all civilian fire deaths occur. Because fire sprinkler systems react so quickly, they can dramatically reduce the heat, flames, and smoke produced in a fire. Fire sprinklers have been around for more than a century, protecting commercial and industrial properties and public buildings. These are some other benefits:

  • A home fire sprinkler system can reduce the homeowner's insurance premium.
  • Fire departments typically use roughly 10 times as much water as a fire sprinkler would use to contain a fire.
  • Fire sprinklers are environmentally friendly. According to the FM Global and Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (2010), they can reduce the amount of water run-off and pollution, fire damage by up to 71 percent, and water usage to fight a home fire by as much as 91 percent.
  • What are the main steps of the installation and how long does the process typically take?

Every project begins with an analysis of the floor plans. Our design team works closely with the local governing agency and implements the National Fire Protection Association code for residential fire sprinkler systems. Once we have the design in mind, we determine the best system configuration for the project. We map out the location for each fire sprinkler. Plans are submitted for approval with the Building Department and upon approval, a typical 2,500 square-foot house will take approximately two to three days to complete installation. American Fire Protection Systems, Inc. handles all phases of the process from plan submittal, installation, final inspections, and routine maintenance after the system is installed.

What would you recommend that people do after the installation to maintain their fire sprinkler system and insure it is working properly?

We recommend contacting a qualified fire protection contractor to inspect the fire sprinkler system every five years to ensure the system is working properly and is ready to activate in the case of a fire.
