Important Tips on Packing for Your Move: An Interview with Darren D'hont of San Diego Moving Company

By Darren D'hont

Tell us a little bit about your experience, company history and the services you offer.

San Diego Moving Company is a family owned and operated business, which was started back in 2007. We offer full-service residential and commercial moving packages in San Diego County. What makes our company unique is that we sponsor The Angels Foster Family Network, a nonprofit agency that finds loving homes for local toddlers and babies who have been abused or neglected. A portion of our proceeds goes to this worthy charity.

What's one of the biggest mistakes that you've seen people make when they're preparing for a move?

The first mistake people make is under estimating the amount of items they have, which lengthens the moving process. The second mistake we see often is when people are not quite ready for their move. When the movers arrive there may be items that still need to be packed or furniture that needs to be disassembled, which we don't mind doing but this slows down the moving process significantly.

When do you think the best time to start packing is and what's the best strategy to use?

1-2 months prior: Start going through your belongings and donate or throw away whatever you have no use for.

7-10 days prior: Start with items you don't use on a daily basis. Focus on one room at a time and make sure to label all your boxes. Save all hardware in a plastic bag when disassembling furniture.

1 day prior: Pack toiletries and clothes as if you are going on a week long vacation. That way you have the essentials you need as soon as you move in.

How should fragile items be packed to ensure their safety?

Wrapping fragile items with packing paper or bubble is great way to safely transport your items. Pack your items securely but don't overfill the boxes.

How should bigger furniture be prepared for moving (couches, beds, etc.)?

The movers will take care of that for you. But if you choose to wrap your own items, you can drape furniture blankets over the furniture and then wrap securely with shrink wrap. Our movers are trained to perform what we call a "360 wrap" where every corner of the piece of furniture is covered with blankets and stretch wrap.

What packing or moving advice would you give to people moving in or to the San Diego area?

Book your move at least three weeks ahead of time. We often have clients looking to move at the very last minute and we do our best to accommodate them, but our calendar tends to fill up quickly. So if you have a specific date in mind, plan ahead!
