INKredibleDesign Celebrates Place, In San Diego And Beyond

By S. Mathur

San Diego based artist and photographer Brandon Hubbard works in different mediums, from pen and ink sketches to watercolors and photographs. They all celebrate place in one form or another. San Diego was the right place to begin, and Hubbard started with pictures of local street signs.

"I knew the signs concept would go over well because everyone living here has neighborhood pride, and the fact that San Diego has done such a great job showcasing these places with beautiful and iconic signage made it easy to document," he said. "Plus with our amazing ocean + coastal scenes, a skyline that changes along the different angles around the bay, plus the great wooden and concrete piers we have, it makes going down to the water fun and adventurous. I've been blessed with the opportunity to make a living documenting this amazing city and hopefully I can keep this momentum going for many years to come."

Hubbard started out selling his work at local farmers markets and now does large scale installations for offices and homes, as well as interior design consulting. He still goes to farmers markets, artwalks and street fairs, locally and around the country. He also does garment printing and has an apparel line called INKredibleAPPAREL.

"I tell people I am an artist who likes to take nice photos, not a just photographer since my work goes so much further than that," Hubbard said. "I began my interest in art as a child built around my capability to accurately draw things I could see with my eyes and not from memory. I sketch mainly with the use of pen and ink, while my watercolors manipulate my ink drawings by adding pockets of color, which differs from traditional watercolors."

The watercolors, photographs and prints now depict the entire United States and other countries as well.

"In 2015 I began a mapping project where I hand drew a map of every state in the country to broaden my scope of work since I was meeting so many people from other places at my shows," Hubbard said. "That lead to changing my company name from Signs of San Diego to INKredibleDESIGN in 2016 to umbrella my diverse work, which also includes sketches and photography from abroad, my portrait photography studio, and the original Signs of San Diego work."

When asked about his favorite pieces, Hubbard responds like a true artist, breaking it up by style. His favorite dawning is his picture of the downtown San Diego skyline; among watercolors, he picks the Hotel Del Coronado while his map of the US, with each county meticulously outlined, is the most impressive. His favorite photo is of Scripps Pier, or rather under the pier.
