Island Fun at Coronado Hot Yoga

By Jake Levin

When Lauren Mills set out to create an intimate community within the already tight-knit island of Coronado, Calif., she had one thing in mind.

On an island where everybody seems to know everybody, Mills decided to create a still intimate but less intimidating community based around health and wellness, while also filling a void in the yoga market. And so in March of 2017 Mills took over operation of Coronado Hot Yoga, the lone studio in Coronado with hot yoga options. The studio initially opened in April, 2013.

Over four years into the venture, it's safe to say Mills has achieved her goal of what she set out to create.

"The students have really created a family at Coronado Hot Yoga," Mills said. "The atmosphere is warm (literally and figuratively!) because our students and staff members are very friendly and welcoming. Our studio is more than just a workout facility; it's home away from home!"

Mills admitted that practicing hot yoga sounds scary at first, but after your first or second class, students seem to get acclimated to the heat.

"Moving your body in a heated room is going to increase your heart rate, strengthening your heart muscle, and it will boost your metabolism," Mills said. "Expect to burn tons of calories in class!"

Hotter rooms are conducive to safer deep stretching as well, with quick progress seen on students' flexibility regularly. The heat also enables students to detoxify, as toxins are flushed through the skin during perspiration.

But above all else, practicing yoga of any kind is a great way to relieve stress.

"If you are looking to ease stress, make new friends, change your body, change your mind, or change your life, come and take a class with us," Mills said. "The way you feel after class is hard to put into words, but you'll feel like a whole new person."

Students of all ages and abilities frequent Coronado Hot Yoga, with a wide array of classes available. The popular 90-minute Bikram yoga class is now available in a pared-down 60-minute version for those who aren't ready for the extended time yet, or who simply need to get a quicker yoga fix.

Heated Vinyasa yoga, as well as Pilates, classes are also a new feature at Coronado Hot Yoga.

"With more variety, there is something for everyone," Mills said.

Coronado Hot Yoga is located at 1330 Orange Ave. in Coronado, just a block from the Pacific Ocean.
