Supporting Small Businesses: San Diego Beer and Wine Tours

By Elisha Neubauer

"Do what you love and the money will follow-" these words were the daily mantra Shira Bliss repeated to herself after losing her merger and acquisitions consulting job to the recession. It was then that she decided to combine her love of fine wine, walking, and gourmet food to create San Diego Beer and Wine Tours. Bliss used her newly founded company to help boost the economy while simultaneously drawing visitors and locals to wine bars, breweries, restaurants, and wineries in the San Diego area.

"What many people don't know about the wine and craft beer scene is how instrumental San Diego is to how it all started," says Shira Bliss of San Diego Beer and Wine Tours. In 1769, the first San Diego grapes were grown by Father Junipero Serra. These were used to produce wine for religious ceremonies in the area approximately fifty years before any commercialization of the wine industry in Napa Valley began. San Diego is also hugely popular in the craft beer world being dubbed as the "craft beer capitol of the world". "San Diego is also so well known for their double IPA that the beer is being referred to as a San Diego style IPA. Definitely a San Diego Beer that can't be missed," Bliss remarks.

San Diego Beer and Wine Tours works to keep the experience local, authentic, and environmentally friendly. "We are passionate about supporting the local economy by chauffeuring our guests on a tasty adventure of San Diego's premier wineries. No need to travel all the way to Temecula (Riverside County)," explains Bliss. The company focuses on family establishments, not corporate wineries, so guests receive a more personal experience- and support small businesses. The group also offers the Go Green option on their train tours for customers who wish to be a little more eco-friendly. "Reducing one's carbon footprint is so important and our GREEN tours are right in keeping with our goal of supporting environmentally-friendly and energy efficient business services," Bliss explains.

When it comes to pleasing customers, San Diego Beer and Wine Tours seems to have it down to an art. "San Diego Wine Country Tour was a fabulous Adventure! The fine wine, fresh organic food, and amazing views on the San Diego Wine Country Tour offered by San Diego Beer and Wine tours made our anniversary a day we will never forget," says one online reviewer. Other reviewers rave about enjoying great food and wine, while being able to walk off the calories after. "San Diego Beer and Wine Tours is a diamond in the rough. I never knew we had such great local wineries and I have lived in San Diego all my life! A great experience for out of towners or locals," exclaims Amanda L., a former patron.

With chauffeured tours, train tours, and walking tours, there's a tour to fit any activity level. The company also offers wine tasting parties, interactive brewmaster and winemaker events, corporate and private events, and holiday tours. If you're looking for a new way to explore your surrounding area, or you're new in town and are looking to get acquainted- San Diego Beer and Wine Tours is a unique way to fall in love with the San Diego area.
