Like a Grown-Up In A Candy Store: Sugarfina Savors Its Sweet Success

By Pamela Sosnowski

For Josh Resnick and Rosie O'Neill, the dream they shared was a sweet one, indeed: to open a candy store full of sophisticated treats geared more towards adults. They got their inspiration while watching, not ironically, a screening of the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, pondering to themselves, "Why should kids have all the fun?"

"In the two years that followed, they traveled the world to meet with artisan candy makers and taste-tested thousands of candies in the search to find the best of the best," says the retailer's Director of Marketing, Liat Mazor Considine. "Every candy is packaged with love, perfect for giving as a gift or treating yourself."

Today, Sugarfina has store locations throughout the United States and overseas, and all products may also be purchased online. Many of the sweets are imported, such as an assortment of gummy candies from Germany, licorice from Holland, and shimmery pearl shaped chocolates from Greece. However, several are made in the USA as well. No matter what customers choose, every candy in the boutique shops are carefully packaged before it leaves the store, making the experience of purchasing candy all that more luxurious.

By far the company's biggest bestseller is its champagne gummy bears from Germany, which are infused with Dom Pérignon champagne. Their pink tinted Whispering Angel Rosé infused gummy bears were also a big hit upon their release, thanks to advance press about the wine flavored gummies that created a wait list of over 12,000 orders. "Our cocktail-themed candies are very popular," says Considine. "Other top sellers include peach bellinis, sugar lips, dark chocolate sea salt caramels and single malt Scotch cordials."

To quote from the movie that inspired the store's launch, "Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker." But Sugarfina's liquor flavored candies don't actually contain any alcohol; it is burned off through the cooking process. For those that do prefer a little kick in their confectionaries, the single malt Scotch and Limoncello cordials do contain alcohol, and require the purchaser to be 21+ with a valid ID.

Sugarfina's candy has made appearances on The Tonight Show and Live With Kelly. The shops are known for their ultra friendly, sunny sales associates and customer attention. This special treatment extends to the packaging as well. "In addition to high-quality candies, Sugarfina offers beautifully-packaged gifts with endless customization options," says Considine. "Our candy bento boxes are a fun way to customize a gift box with your favorite candies. If you bring a box of Sugarfina to a party, you'll surely be the most popular guest of the evening!"
