Misty Dameron isn't your typical photographer. The Bakersfield, CA photographer developed her love for photography a little later than most, 18 years ago after the birth of her first child. She wished she had a photographer with her at all times, and so she became her own, documenting her child's early years and finding her eventual career.
"All of a sudden I noticed light falling on my beautiful boy," Dameron said. "I saw backgrounds differently and started taking a whole bunch of images just for me. So, I guess the beauty in my kids brought out the artist in me."
In 2002, she officially started her business and now says she's experienced it all and sees no surprises. She doesn't focus on posed portrait photography, but instead natural, lifestyle images. She's been taking wedding photos for 16 years now and said she's fast and relaxed in that environment.
"I enjoy starting with the classic portraiture images, but mostly love capturing the real side to people and the candid moments that make that day so special," Dameron said. "I think my tendency to capture people in their realest form is beautiful."
Her favorite type of photos to take are high school seniors. She said she enjoys capturing the raw time of life they're in, still figuring out what they want in life. Many of her senior portraits show the subject's personality in sharp, colorful images.
"Nothing is more fun to me than getting a high school senior to be comfortable with who they are and showing that beauty within," Dameron said. "But honestly, I love it all. The story of life interests me."
Dameron charges $350 for a starting portrait collection and $2,000 for her basic wedding package. Dameron's studio is in her home after being in downtown Bakersfield in the historic Icehouse for several years. Visit mistydameron.com to view her gallery and inquire about services.
