Preparing to Paint the Exterior of Your House: An Interview with Stan Papa of Gold Coast Painting

By Stan Papa

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We have been a family owned business since 1986. We paint interiors and exteriors of homes, commercial and industrial buildings. We also offer special finishes and epoxy coatings.

What is the first step that Southern California homeowners should take before hiring a contractor to paint the exterior of their house?

Make sure the contractor you choose is licensed, bonded and insured, and has good references. Try to figure out colors selections.

What are the basic options that people have when it comes to the paint and materials?

They can request whatever paint brand the contractor is using that it is their best product. All stores have low and high lines. I like to use Dunn Edwards Evershield line.

Can you briefly describe the main steps involved in the process of painting the exterior of a home? How long does everything typically take?

An average home of 3,000 square feet would take approximately three to four days for completion. We would bleach and pressure wash, complete all necessary preparation, trenching, scraping, sanding, patching and anything else that would make the finished job last for years.

How should the siding of a home be prepared before painting?

Depending on the condition of the siding, it should be sanded and cleaned. It possibly may require a prime coat and two coats of finish.

Do you have any tips for people in Southern California for getting the best exterior painting job done?

Make sure your contractor does his preparation and uses high-quality materials.
