Steve Simpson Photography Strives to Capture a Certain Feeling in One Photograph

By S. Mathur

Photography was always part of his childhood, says Steve Simpson, Owner of Steve Simpson Photography. In fact, he learned the craft from his father, a hobby photographer who built a darkroom in the garage. "So I was around black and white photography a lot," he says, "I always loved taking pictures and enjoyed the process of developing. About five years ago, my wife bought me an entry level DSLR camera kit."

Stories of hobbies becoming fulfilling careers are always inspiring and Simpson's is no exception. With his new camera he began taking family portraits and investing his income in better equipment: "Now I have the freedom of not worrying about if I have the right camera or lens. The challenge is only up to my creativity and desire to create something different for myself and my clients."

He specializes in portraits, because he loves the spontaneity that goes with taking pictures of people rather than posed shoots with models: "I love people and I love capturing the naturalness of a person. Each photo session is led by my desire to be different. When I start producing the same images as everybody else, or the same image I have created before; it is time to take a step back and recalculate who I want to be."

Having experimented with other art forms such as painting, Simpson is convinced that photography is his medium for creating works of art. This means that he doesn't do cookie-cutter images of weddings or babies. His portraits and event photography capture the unique-ness of each. He feels that his work is best suited for people who are looking for new perspectives or something different, such as the new techniques and locations he loves to try.

As well as family portraits, Simpson specializes in capturing lifestyles, senior portraits and events such as weddings and maternity. His event photos portfolio covers fairs, music concerts, graduations, sports, weddings and even funerals. Marketing assignments have included such diverse subjects as swimwear, music CD covers and author mugshots, all with his unique perspective and settings.

Simpson's creativity embraces difference and he welcome diverse subjects, be they men, women, boys, girls, LBGT friendly, Christians, Buddhists, Hillbillies, or Rap Artists. He's happy to work with people's vision of themselves and will discuss possible settings and images. He welcomes creative collaborations, and will travel to help his subjects find their perfect location, anywhere in Kern County and the Kern River Valley, and even beyond.

Clients appreciate the mix of professionalism and creativity Simpson brings to his work, and his willingness to help bring their vision to life. And the resulting images speak for themselves, giving a unique insight into events, families, and people.
