THE LAB Uses Cutting Edge Sports Science To Help Athletes

By S. Mathur

THE LAB opened in 2015 in Santa Barbara CA, to give athletes the benefit of the most advanced knowledge in sports science. It offers personalized training, physical therapy, sports massage and cutting-edge technology to help in recovery from injuries. In fact, it has everything that serious but non professional athletes need to maximize their performance. The focus is on building, restoring, and regenerating the athlete's body.

THE LAB's partner facility is the Peak Performance Project (P3), founded by Harvard-trained physician Dr. Marcus Elliott in 2005.

"P3 is the first performance facility to utilize advanced sports science technologies to assess and train professional athletes," Operations Manager Bentley Nunes said. "We have a rich history of supporting and advising professional sports organizations with cutting-edge assessment, prescription and training services. Hundreds of elite athletes have benefited from P3, and we have the data to prove it."

At THE LAB's recovery center, non professional athletes can find the same level of care. This includes whole-body cryotherapy, NormaTec compression systems and an anti-gravity AlterG treadmill. Members all levels and abilities have access to these tools and more to improve, recover, and perform at their best. Services include physical therapy, Normatec recovery, blood and lactate testing, massage, bike fitting and bio mechanical testing. Yoga and Pilates classes are also suitable for all ages and skill levels.

The AlterG anti gravity treadmill, which uses technology developed for NASA trainings, is used for both rehabilitation and training.

"The AlterG anti-gravity treadmill features NASA-developed technology that utilizes air pressure to make one's body feel up to 80 percent lighter," Nunes said. "Users can adjust the load in 1-percent increments, allowing them to customize their rehabilitation or training experience."

While the idea of cryotherapy might sound a little intimidating, clients find that it leaves them feeling energized and looking forward to the next session. The treatment is used for pain reduction and therapy as well as sports training. It is remarkably effective at pain reduction.

"Whole-body cryotherapy exposes the body to ultra-low temperatures for a short period of time, which has been shown to increase performance and decrease recovery times," Nunes said. "The treatment has been shown to reduce key inflammatory markers after a single session."

The staff are both knowledgeable and friendly, making THE LAB a resource for seasoned athletes, trainers and coaches. Each member begins with a full body assessment of biomechanics and performance. A customized training plan is developed by the Lab Director of Training. Short term memberships are also available for visitors.
