The Pilates Body Builds Friendships and Community Through Adaptable Class Instruction

By Kelly Church

Growing up, Kelly Tourgeman was always active. The Pilates Body owner admittedly fell off of her fair share of trees, fences, horses and bikes. Picking up Pilates, she said, may have added a little balance and grace into her life, and after practicing for two years, she became a Pilates instructor. Her Glendale, CA studio The Pilates Body has now been around for 16 years.

Tourgeman called her storefront a "boutique studio" that works one-on-one with each student. The Pilates Body offers private Pilates reformer classes, group classes and mat Pilates classes. All classes welcome all experience levels. Private lessons in particular are catered to the individual's skill level and goals.

"Pilates is amazing in its adaptability," Tourgeman said. "We see men and women, professional to armchair athletes, and ages that run the gamut from 15 to 85. We welcome one and all."

Many instructors at The Pilates Body are also students of other subjects. According to Tourgeman, her instructors also know many different types of medicine, including chiropractic and physical therapies. Some are also dancers and artists. The combination of these skills only enhances classes at the studio, pulling elements of each discipline for the best fitness results.

Through her studio, Tourgeman wants to build a sense of community that every client can enjoy. More than a few friendships have been sparked by classes and commonalities at the studio. Tourgeman encourages this communal atmosphere by creating fun, inspiring and motivating initiatives.

"It is a joy to share this mind-body form of movement with the community," Tourgeman said. "Each month we run contests, raffles and promotions for our clients. We find it helps to build a true sense of community at [The Pilates Body]. Plus, it creates a constant source of fitness motivation."

All classes at The Pilates Body must be reserved ahead of time. Individual classes cost $35, but clients can also purchase a series of four for $120 or a series of eight for $200. Visit thepilatesbodyglendale.com for more information on scheduling and classes offered at the studio.
