Think Big at CrossFit TOB

By Jake Levin

Josh Witcher and his wife fell in love at first sight?with CrossFit.

Each member of the husband and wife team had played collegiate athletics and were burned out from the same old workouts at the gym. They'd exhausted other options as well, such as boot camp workouts, P90 and things of that nature, all with one thing in common in that they didn't give the Witcher's the fix they needed.

After attending a few satisfying sessions of CrossFit classes in Bakersfield, Calif., things began to happen awfully quickly and on May 18, 2015, CrossFit TOB was born with an awesome atmosphere made up of great people that are all there for the same reason: to get fit.

"We have all ages and all different body types," Witcher said. "We have ex-athletes, we have people that have never played a sport, we have tall and short members. We have really strong athletes and athletes that excel in more cardiovascular areas of CrossFit. Everyone is different and they bring their own individual skills to class. We don't care how much you can lift, we don't care how fast you can run a mile, we just care that you are active and get a workout in."

TOB, which stands for "Think Outside the Box," was inspired by wanting to bring something different to Bakersfield. As soon as Witcher heard the name, he knew it was a keeper.

"We do this out of fun and love for the sport," Witcher said. "We have two kids who maybe one day will take it over or at least develop healthy habits that they will take with them as they move through their own life. We like to think of it as if we give our members the best of what we have to offer and approach each day and give 100 percent we will receive the same from them. We cannot explain how much we love each and every member that walks through that door."

The Witchers realize that CrossFit is not for everyone, which is why each potential member gets a one-week free trial.

Witcher believes that the variety of programs offered at CrossFit TOB is what sets it apart from its competitors. While the gym may not be the biggest and the equipment may not be straight from last year's CrossFit Games, Witcher said that each member will leave feeling confident in themselves, stronger, and faster than they did the day before.

"When you see a 'TOBBER' at any competition you better believe that they will be prepared for anything," Witcher said. "We may not win everything, but if you don't bring your A game, we are there to pass you up, it is pretty simple."
