Zizzo's Coffee Does Double Brew Duty By Serving Coffee By Day, Beer By Night

By Pamela Sosnowski

Zizzo's Coffee is one-upping the usual retail coffee chains. Sure, it's a coffeehouse by day, serving premium coffee, mochas, lattes, hot chocolate, and other beverages as well as breakfast fare. By night, however, the brews offered at its Hollister Village location are of the craft beer variety?and the restaurant also serves wine, pizza, gourmet burgers, and more in a sports bar atmosphere.

"What separates us from other coffeehouses is that we are so much more than just coffee," explains Chiara DiMarco, the company's marketing coordinator. "We are known in Goleta and Santa Barbara for our delicious and premium coffee but within this past year we have brought in so many more elements like craft beer from local micro breweries, a full selection of red and white wine, and a full menu where customers can enjoy a selection of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. We have four flat screen TVs showing sporting events. It's a great place to catch up with a close friend in the morning sipping on your favorite cup of Joe, or for bringing in the whole gang to watch your NFL team during the playoffs. It is truly a unique place."

Zizzo's is owned by a husband and wife team, Michael and Sue McDonald, who decided to swap the corporate world for their own business that promoted their shared passion for coffee. After becoming enamored with a franchise coffeehouse with a surfer vibe called Zizzo's Coffee in Capitola, they opened up their own location in Goleta as well as the only drive-thru coffee shop within 30 miles of Santa Barbara in 2009. When Zizzo's franchise owner decided to dissolve the business, the McDonalds took over as the full owners.

Zizzo's now has three locations: the drive-thru in Goleta, a second Goleta location at the new Ice in Paradise Skating Center, and the coffeehouse and brew pub in Hollister Village, which is just over a year old. One thing that has remained the same since 2009 is the level of quality and customer service.

"The quality of our customer service is of utmost highest priority to us and we have built a great team of baristas and servers who care about each person who walks through Zizzo's door," says DiMarco. "Zizzo's itself embodies Santa Barbara's relaxed, welcoming, and adventurous vibe. Our goal has always been to provide a place for the community to gather and enjoy each others company, whether it be over a strong cup of Joe, or the latest craft beer brew."

A full weekend breakfast is now being served at the Hollister Village location, featuring free refills on mimosas. Some of the menu favorites at the same restaurant include the spicy bacon mac and cheese, fusion potato nachos, and the paradise burger. The chain also offers catering services to the Santa Barbara and Goleta communities, serving pizzas, a taco bar, chicken wings, jalapeno poppers, and more.
