Hiring Movers vs. Doing It Yourself

By Eddie Gallese

Whether or not to hire a moving company is a choice that you should definitely put some thought into. Of course, moving on you own may seem like the smart thing to do if you are on a budget. However, before you go and rent a truck there are a few things you should think about first.

Of course, your primary concern is how much stuff you have. Moving out of your studio apartment is far more simple than moving out of a four-bedroom home. A bigger house means that you need to rent a bigger truck. Not only does a bigger truck cost more rent but you also need to put more gas in it. In addition, it is important not to forget that moving is extremely labor intensive. Injury is always a possibility when you spend a day picking up heavy boxes, furniture, and appliances.

Another thing you need to consider when it comes to moving is the distance. Longer moves not only cost more money but also more complicated. While cross-town or cross state moves are you most likely can handle on your own with the help of you friend's pickup, moving across country might be something you want to leave to professional movers. If you have a lot of fragile goods, this is especially true. It is a moving company's job to know how to correctly ship fragile goods. Also, when you use a moving a company your goods are insured.

Finally, there are the little things that you have to worry about when you decide to go it alone. You are the one who needs to make sure that you have all the equipment and materials to move. Not only this, you have to do it on a deadline. It is up to you to make sure you have all the boxes, bubble wrap, and tape and that you have enough people to help you out. These things can add up to a good sum of money, right down to the coffee and doughnuts you buy for the people you got to help!
