Moving Advice

By Beth Drucker

Moving from one home to another can be a daunting task, whether you're moving from one state to another or simply next door. The following are several tips to make the process as hassle-free as possible:

  • If you need to hire a moving company, call in advance because they are often busy as well. You'll want to make sure a truck is available when you need it. It's also easier on them and you to deal with the details when you're not in a rush to move everything.
  • Pack items you'll need during the first day or two separately from everything else so it's easy to access.
  • Record the makes, models, and serial numbers of your electronics and other items. Keep this information, along with all of your other important documents such as birth certificates, passports, insurance information, wills, etc. in a set location.
  • Take measurements of your new home to make sure your furniture will fit through the door and in the spots you want to keep the items.
  • If the previous homeowners are taking their curtains and blinds with them, take measurements and bring or buy new sets so you don't have to worry about privacy.
  • Arrange in advance for home and utility hookups such as internet and cable or satellite.
  • Let the post office know your change of address.
  • You can often get discarded cardboard boxes from grocery stores, electronics stores, and office supply stores for free.
  • Keep a close eye on your valuables.
  • Mark large, valuable items on the mover's inventory form in case of damage.
