Moving Insurance Options

By Derren Peters

Moving to a new place, whether across the Bay State or halfway around the globe, comes with enough headaches on its own. There's packing, switching on utilities, getting mail forwarded (and inevitably having mail still show up at your old place). Having a prized (and pricey) item damaged while in the hands of the movers

Even though you've hired them to handle the move, the moving company isn't as liable for property damage as you may think. Movers in Massachusetts do not offer insurance as a standard feature; what they provide is 'valuation protection'. This type of limited liability coverage is offered for free, but doesn't provide much protection. Unless you purchase additional coverage, they do not pay for losses or damages. They are only responsible for the minimum amount -- that's $0.30 per pound per item, in the case of a local and intrastate move, or $0.60 per pound per item, with an interstate or international move.

You do have several options to ensure your items are protected. You can buy an insurance policy through a third-party insurer, but first check with your home insurance company and see if your existing policy covers your possessions while in transit. Most policies only cover your household goods while in your residence, not in the movers' possession. Still, check to see what they offer, as it may save you money over buying a third-party plan. You can also pay a bit more and get a higher level of protection through your mover, known as "full-value replacement protection." With this plan, any goods lost, damaged or destroyed during the move will be repaired or replaced.
